I've had so many questions from people about why I do
what I do and how I came to do it that I thought I'd just
take the time now to tell you how and why I started
One True North.
You should know from the start that this was not easy
for me. Starting a new band was the furthest thing from
my mind. I had a good job and I also played rock & roll
in many of the night clubs around Columbus, Ohio. You may
have seen me in those days. I really enjoyed what I
did. But things were about to change.
One day I came home from work and turned on the news:
It was the Columbine High School tragedy and just as
I turned it on the newscaster said, "He had a gun to
a girl's head and asked her if she was a Christian. She
replied, "Yes I am." and he pulled the trigger.
Even one small thing you do can make a difference...
At that moment I became sick. My own two children were
the same age as this girl. I wondered what direction
they were heading. Was I leading them or just watching
them grow?
I knew enough about
the Bible to know that Peter walked
with Jesus before then denying him three times, yet
this little fourteen-year-old said, "YES, I am."
with a gun to her head. I wanted to know more about
the God she believed in. That was the start of my journey.
If you don't think it's possible to add power to her
testimony and sacrifice, then just consider what was
written on her back-pack that lay just a few feet from
her dead body: "I WANT MY LIFE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE."
I had to stop and think about the direction of my life
and whether it was making a difference... What was I
doing with my talents, my construction business, and
my life? Was I just consuming resources? Taking in everything
for me? Whose world is this anyway? And what about the
example I was showing my children. It was time for a
change. It was time to accept and build a relationship
with God.
We chose our name, One True North, because The name
in itself, talks about direction and the music is about
where that direction comes from. You're never lost if you
know your One True North. We share some amazing stories
and messages while we play. If your group or church would
like us to share our music or message, just let us know.
Not only can this little girl's life make a difference,
not only can my life make a difference, but YOURS CAN,
TOO! Use the gifts God has given you to improve this
world and the people around you - you never know where
it might lead.
Do you think this little girl really died? Maybe in
the flesh but not in the Spirit.
